Nothing says Valentines Day in Washington, DC than getting the hell out of Washington (sort of) and doing something outdoors. You don’t have to go incredibly far to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature (and an occasional incoming plane looking to land at Reagan); it’s just a short automotive jaunt (or a decent walk) down the GW Parkway North to Roosevelt Island.
The Island is rife with wildlife from ducks and a number of birds (we saw a woodpecker) to newts and tiny lizards scurrying along the man made swamp walk. Whether you’re looking for a place to run or walk, a reason to get out of the city, a place to take that special lady for some peace and quiet, or a place to take the kids – this is one of my favorite getaways near D.C.
Aside from the astounding surroundings on the rim trail of the island, the center of the island yields a commanding statue of Mr. Roosevelt himself, some large stones with quotes from the man, and some beautiful designed bridges and pools of water. So next weekend, get out and check it out!
