The Future of Media in 2008

May 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Bloggers, DC Social Media, Vlog

Chris Condayan approached me outside of Capitol City Brewery on Capitol Hill at the pre-Podcamp DC happy hour for a brief interview. This is the video that ensued. @CSuspect aka Chris Condayan, a “recovering punk rocker” in his own right put together this video highlighting the challenges that “old media” faces in lieu of the all the user generated content and new media outlets stealing the attention of what was previously a captive audience. In his own words,

“57% of senior executives in the media and entertainment industries view user-generated content as one of the top three challenges they face today. Filmed on April 19, 2008 at Podcamp DC, I interview several media makers from organizations as diverse as NPR, Porter Novelli, CNN, Harris Teeters, etc., who are creating their own content for their own niches on their own time, and foresee a future that will make traditional media obsolete.”

I dig this piece. Lots of got soundbites.

BTW, I’m-a fan of “new media” and I’ve seen how it’s affected print and tv, but I don’t believe traditional media will ever be obsolete. Everything will probably just balance out.

Oh yeah…itll all be absorbed into each other…the best of all breeds will survive and it will all be in one medium or another. TV will have more user generated content, the internet will have more formulaic content like the networks - but the chaos will always still be there…and we will be creating it…and they’ll always be keeping up…and we’ll always be trying to figure out how to monetize and be legit.

Thanks for embedding the video Scott. I too know that traditional media will always be around. What I should have said is “foresee a future that MAY make traditional media obsolete.”

However, there are several network shows that combine traditional and new media together already, a couple examples are:

    1. The Spock Market which runs in tandem with reruns of Star Trek on the G4 Cable Network.

    2. ReGenesis - a CSI/24 type show in Canada that actually allows the audience to determine the way the drama unfolds by networking with the show’s writers.

Either way, interesting times lie ahead.
